Red Sox’s Buckholz to see back specialist

CHICAGO (AP) —

Boston Red Sox right-hander Clay Buchholz(notes) will visit back specialist Dr.
Robert Watkins in Los Angeles on Monday, manager Terry Francona said Friday.

Buchholz, who has been on the disabled list since June 17 with a lower back
strain, threw a 30-pitch bullpen session Monday. He has not thrown since and
won’t until he sees Watkins.

Francona said shortstop Jed Lowrie(notes), who hasn’t played since June 16 because
of a sore left shoulder, should be able to start his rehab with Triple-A
Pawtucket on Monday.

Right-handed reliever Bobby Jenks(notes) received an injection for his tight back
and Francona said it “hit the spot.” Jenks has made 19 appearances this season.

Left fielder Carl Crawford(notes) was back in the starting lineup Friday night
against Chicago after missing two starts with a left elbow strain.

Red Sox pitchers close to return

CLEVELAND — Boston Red Sox pitchers Bobby Jenks and John Lackey are closer to returning to the team as they recover from injuries.

Jenks, who has been on the disabled list since May 5 with a right biceps strain, threw 25 pitches in a bullpen session prior to Monday’s game against the Indians. He plans to throw again in the bullpen Wednesday. Jenks, one of Boston’s setup men, is 1-2 with a 9.35 ERA in 11 appearances.

Lackey, who has been on the DL since May 16 with a right elbow strain, plans to have a bullpen session on Tuesday. Lackey is 2-5 with an 8.01 ERA in seven starts.

Red Sox center fielder Mike Cameron will have season-ending surgery to repair a torn abdominal muscle. Manager Terry Francona says he doesn’t know the exact date of the surgery, but it’s necessary to get the 37-year-old outfielder on pace to return next spring.
