BOSTON (CBS) – The Boston Red Sox announced their 2012 Major League coaching staff on Friday, with some familiar faces sticking around with Bobby Valentine for next season.

Tim Bogar has been named bench coach, Bob McClure joins the staff as pitching coach, Alex Ochoa has been appointed first base coach and Jerry Royster has been named third base coach, general manager Ben Cherington and Valentine announced Friday.

Hitting Coach Dave Magadan and Bullpen Coach Gary Tuck will both return in the same roles they held in 2011.

The 45-year-old Bogar is in his fourth year with the Red Sox in 2012. He spent the last two seasons as Boston’s third base coach after joining the club as first base coach before the 2009 campaign. A former infielder, Bogar played 701 Major League games over nine seasons with the Mets (1993-96), Astros (1997-2000) and Los Angeles Dodgers (2001).

Read: Sox, Yankees Only Teams Hit With Luxury Tax

McClure, 59, recently joined the Red Sox organization as a special assignment scout/instructor. He spent the last six seasons as the pitching coach for the Kansas City Royals after being named to that position on October 12, 2005. During his tenure as Kansas City’s pitching coach, he worked with 2009 American League Cy Young Award Winner Zack Greinke and his 2011 staff’s 4.44 ERA was the best single-season mark for the club since 1994.

Read: A’s Send Gio Gonzalez To Washington

Ochoa, 39, was the hitting coach for Boston’s High-A Salem affiliate last season and his batters led the Carolina League in on-base percentage (.328), and finished third in average (.254) and slugging (.387). He began his professional coaching career in 2009 as Boston’s staff assistant and served as a special assistant in the Red Sox Baseball Operations department in 2010. Ochoa is a veteran of eight Major League seasons.

Both Ochoa and Bogar played under Valentine during their time with the Mets.

The 59-year-old Royster has been involved in professional baseball for over 40 years. He most recently managed the Lotte Giants of the Korea Baseball Organization from 2008-10, becoming the league’s first foreign manager. He led the Giants to the playoffs in each of his three seasons at the helm. Royster previously served on Major League coaching staffs as third base coach for the Rockies in 1993 and as the Brewers bench coach from 2000 until taking over as interim manager from April 18, 2002 through the end of that season.

Major League Baseball's winter meetings are being held in Dallas, Texas.

Major League Baseball’s winter meetings are being held in Dallas, Texas. All of the Boston Red Sox’s top brass will be there. But don’t expect any blockbuster deals like last winter, when the Sox signed Adrian Gonzalez and Carl Crawford. At least, that’s the opinion of The Boston Globe’s Peter Abraham.

That opinion seems to be echoed by WEEI’s Rob Bradford. Although, it’s hard to tell since his latest report on Red Sox winter meetings in Dallas seem to be more about the layout of the hotel lobby and how late the wheeling and dealing often goes into the night at these events.

Other on-line columnists offered the same advice to the Red Sox in Dallas: do nothing. That’s easier said than done. Surely, the Sox will make some deal down there. Who it will be remains to be seen…

Not much else going on in the MLB planet today.

Bobby Valentine has accepted the job as new manager of the Boston Red Sox, US media reported on Tuesday.

Valentine replaces Terry Francona, who left the club in September after the Red Sox had suffered one of the greatest late-season collapses witnessed in Major League Baseball.

Neither Valentine nor the Red Sox would immediately confirm the agreement but local media, including ESPN, where Valentine worked as a sports analyst, said the deal had been made.

ESPN said Valentine was currently in Japan and would return to America to be formally introduced as the new manager on Thursday.

The 61-year-old played in the Major Leagues between 1969 and 1979 before moving into management, with spells at the Texas Rangers and the New York Mets as well as periods coaching in Japan.

He last managed in the major leagues at the Mets, leaving in 2002.

Valentine left his last management job at Japan’s Chiba Lotte Marines in 2009 and began work as an expert television commentator before throwing his hat into the ring for the Red Sox job.

He takes over from Francona, who led the Red Sox to the World Series title in 2004 – ending a championship drought dating back to 1918 – and again in 2007.

Leading the American League East by nine games at the start of the month, the Red Sox lost 20 of their last 27 games to miss out on the playoffs, earning the dubious distinction of the most awful final-month crash, a misery compounded by their status as pre-season favorites after a massive spending spree and a $161 million payroll.

The Boston Red Sox offered salary
arbitration to designated hitter David Ortiz and right-handed
relief pitcher Dan Wheeler, General Manager Ben Cherington said
in a statement released by the team.

Free agents Ortiz, 36, and Wheeler, 33, have until Dec. 7
to accept or decline the offers. Since the team offered salary
arbitration, the Red Sox are eligible to receive two draft picks
for Ortiz — who is designated as a Type A free agent — if he
goes to another team.

Ortiz hit .309 with 29 home runs and 96 runs batted in
during 146 games with Boston last season. He finished fourth in
the American League in slugging percentage at .554 and on-base
percentage at .398. Ortiz earned $12.5 million this past season,
ESPN reported.

Wheeler was 2-2 with a 4.38 earned run average in 47 relief
appearances in his first season with the Major League Baseball
team.

The club decided against offering salary arbitration to
left-handed pitchers Erik Bedard and Trever Miller, right-handed
pitcher Tim Wakefield, outfielders J.D. Drew and Conor Jackson
and catcher Jason Varitek.

Qualifier: players will be classified under one position even if they played at more than one.

Jimmie Foxx:

Hall of Fame legend Jimmie Foxx remains one of the greatest hitters in baseball history. From 1936 to 1942, Foxx anchored the Boston Red Sox lineup with some of the best power numbers ever tallied. He maintained a .320 batting average, .429 on-base percentage and .605 slugging percentage over 887 games in Boston for a 1.034 OPS that ranks second only to Ted Williams in franchise history. He won the 1938 American League MVP, the third of his career, while also winning his second batting title. Foxx totaled 222 home runs with the Red Sox and 534 overall in his 20-year Major League career. Just four players own higher career slugging numbers and only seven have driven in more runs.

Kevin Youkilis(notes):

A three-time All-Star corner infielder for the Red Sox since 2004, Kevin Youkilis stands out as one of the great on-base hitters of today’s generation. Through 911 games with the Red Sox, Youkilis boasts a .289 average, .391 OBP and .492 slugging percentage. He has been an above average defender at both first and third throughout his career; he owns one Gold Glove and briefly held the Major League record for consecutive games without an error by a first baseman. Youkilis has posted a WAR (wins above replacement) north of 4.0 in each of the last five seasons, maxing out at 6.0 in 2008 to rank second in the AL.

Mo Vaughn:

Former AL MVP Mo Vaughn was the Red Sox’s star slugger of the 1990s. In an outstanding six-year stretch from 1993 to 1998, Vaughn batted .315 with a .405 OBP, 148 OPS+ (league average is 100) and averages of 36 home runs and 110 RBI per season. He won the 1995 AL MVP and finished in the top five in voting in two other years. Vaughn ranks seventh in Red Sox history with 230 home runs and his career .936 OPS is good for fifth.

George Scott:

Top defensive first baseman George “Boomer” Scott was a fan favorite in Boston for nine of his 14 Major League seasons from 1966 to 1979. Scott went to three All-Star Games, won eight Gold Gloves and maintained a lifetime OPS+ of 114. He enjoyed his breakout year and finished in the top ten in MVP voting with the “Impossible Dream” Red Sox of 1967 when he batted .303 with a .373 OBP and 138 OPS+. Scott hit 154 home runs with the Red Sox and 271 overall in his career.

Jake Stahl:

Jake Stahl served as player/manager for Boston’s first 100-win team and second World Series Champion in 1912. Stahl was consistently one of the best all-around hitters of his generation. Over six nonconsecutive years in Boston from 1903 to 1913, he maintained a .277 average, .350 OBP and 134 OPS+. He batted a career-high .301 in the 1912 title campaign while leading the team to a .691 winning percentage.

Honorable mentions: Dick Hoblitzell, Candy LaChance, Adrian Gonzalez(notes), Dale Alexander, Stuffy McInnis, Wally Dropo, and Kevin Millar(notes).

Lovullo will arrive Nov. 11 and Detroit Tigers third-base coach

Major League Baseball will announce the 2011 American League MVP Award Nov.

Major League Baseball will announce the 2011 American League MVP Award Nov. 21. Here are five candidates to watch based upon their regular season performances.

Jacoby Ellsbury(notes)

Jacoby Ellsbury of the Boston Red Sox had a .321 batting average to go along with 39 stolen bases and 32 home runs. Ellsbury was one of four Red Sox players with an average above .300 in their vaunted lineup. The outfielder has spent all five years of his career in Boston and had a career high with 105 RBIs in 2011.

Curtis Granderson(notes)

Curtis Granderson of the New York Yankees led the American League with 119 RBIs on 41 home runs. He also had a great all-around performance with 25 stolen bases. The center fielder had his most productive Major League season in his eight-year career in 2011 despite having just a .262 average. Granderson had 11 more home runs than his previous best seasonal mark and over 30 RBIs more than his 2007 season with the Detroit Tigers.

Adrian Beltre(notes)

Adrian Beltre of the Texas Rangers had one of his best seasons ever. He only played in 124 games but his stats belie a meteoric season had he played in all 162. Beltre had 105 RBIs, 32 home runs and a .296 batting average. What is most amazing is that he had only 53 strikeouts to go along with 25 walks.

Adrian Gonzalez(notes)

Adrian Gonzalez of the Boston Red Sox had a .338 batting average in 2011 along with 117 RBI and 27 home runs. Although he didn’t lead the league in any of these three categories, Gonzalez was the best hitter on a team full of them. Three of his mates were on his trail batting above .300 with over 20 home runs.

Jose Bautista(notes)

No one dominated the American League’s batting categories more than Jose Bautista of the Toronto Blue Jays. All of his stats were above and beyond for one person despite playing on a team that finished with a .500 record. Bautista had 43 home runs to lead the AL. He had 103 RBIs, good enough for 10th place. His most amazing stat was that he did all of this despite league-leading 132 walks and 111 strikeouts. Bautista finished with a .302 average but led the American League with an on base percentage of 1.056. This past season was Bautista’s best overall.

    Read More: Boston Red Sox, Chicago Cubs

The Boston Red Sox, Chicago Cubs and Major League Baseball commissioner Bud Selig have agreed Wednesday to grant the Red Sox and Cubs a one-week extension as they work to come to an agreement regarding the compensation the Red Sox will get in exchange for their former general manager, Theo Epstein, who took the same job with the Cubs on Oct. 26.

The teams were originally given a Nov. 1 deadline and Selig had said earlier that if a deal were not cemented by that date, he would intervene. Clearly, he has changed his mind.

“We’re going to have a little more time to work it out,” Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington said, according to ESPN Boston. “I’m not sure exactly how much, at least a week, I would guess. I think this is just a practical decision, with everything going on, Theo in Chicago, for us here with a managerial search and whatnot, just haven’t had a lot of time to spend on it. So we got a little more time and hopefully will have a little more time to talk about it.”

For Cherington, coming to an agreement is difficult because there is not much precedent as far as what a team should be compensated in exchange for its general manager.

“Because of that, our position has been we have to look at this particular circumstance,” Cherington said. “There was an understanding, again, at the very beginning the Red Sox would get significant compensation if Theo left to go to Chicago. That’s been the challenge, agreeing on what significant means.

“But I think again, in Theo’s case, if we rewind the clock this was not someone who ownership was looking to push out the door in any way and we were still in a position of having a really good team in 2012. He was under contract, and then we had a manager leaving, we had a manager search going on, so there were a lot of things going on at the time that made him leaving perhaps challenging. I think that’s where our ownership feels we need to be compensated for that.”

Departing Boston Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein did some of his best work for Boston in the amateur draft. Epstein and his staff worked wonders on rebuilding a minor league system that was top-heavy and shallow entering the 2003 season. During Epstein’s tenure, the Red Sox have integrated a wealth of young talent including several Major League stars. He leaves the Red Sox having drafted four players who have earned All-Star invites so far, plus a very deep system with a great deal of potential down the road.

Dustin Pedroia(notes):

Boston’s second round pick in 2004 and Epstein’s best pick, Dustin Pedroia has developed into the franchise player for the Red Sox. The Red Sox drafted Pedroia out of Arizona State where he won a national Defensive Player of the Year award and twice hit .400. Two years later, he made his Major League debut. Pedroia owns an MVP, a Rookie of the Year award, a World Series ring and three All-Star selections. Through 715 games in the majors, he has a career .305 batting average with a .373 on-base percentage, 479 runs scored, 344 RBI, 75 home runs, 82 stolen bases and 24.5 wins above replacement (WAR).

Jonathan Papelbon(notes):

In 2003, the Red Sox drafted All-Star closer Jonathan Papelbon in the fourth round of Epstein’s first draft as GM. After working out of the bullpen at Mississippi State, Papelbon started for the next two-plus seasons in the minors. He debuted in the majors as a starter in 2005, but when Boston needed bullpen help he returned to his familiar role and never looked back. Over the last seven seasons, he has posted a 2.33 ERA with 509 strikeouts and 17.1 WAR in 429.1 innings. He owns Boston’s all-time saves record with 219 having recorded more than 30 per season every year since 2006.

Jacoby Ellsbury(notes):

2011 American League MVP candidate Jacoby Ellsbury was Boston’s top pick in the 2005 draft. The speedy Oregon State center fielder hit at least .298 at every stop in the minors en route to his 2007 Major League debut. He played so well during his initial call-up that he displaced Coco Crisp(notes) as the starter and was a key player in Boston’s 2007 World Series Championship. After missing most of 2010 with a lingering rib injury, Ellsbury broke out with an incredible 2011 season that included a .321 average, 32 home runs, 105 RBI, 119 runs scored and 39 steals.

Clay Buchholz(notes):

All-Star starting pitcher Clay Buchholz joined the Red Sox in the supplemental first round in 2005. Buchholz mowed down minor league hitters and climbed two levels per year until bringing his outstanding four-pitch arsenal to Boston in 2007. He made an early splash with a no-hitter in just his second MLB game before having to learn to cope with his first struggles in the pros. Since permanently joining the Red Sox rotation in mid-2009, he has posted a 3.10 ERA with a 9.2 WAR in 348.1 innings.

Daniel Bard(notes):

Fireballing relief pitcher Daniel Bard was Boston’s second selection of the 2006 draft. Bard overcame control problems as a starter and became a full-time reliever in 2008 when he began bolting up the minor league ladder. Since joining the Red Sox in 2009, he has proven himself to be an excellent setup man with stretches where he is virtually unhittable. Bard has a career 2.88 ERA with 213 strikeouts in 197 innings out of the Red Sox bullpen.

Honorable mentions: Justin Masterson(notes), David Murphy(notes) and Jed Lowrie(notes).

Talks began a week ago, after Epstein and the Cubs agreed in principle to a five-year deal worth between $15-20 million, sources said.

Recently the teams have been discussing minor leaguers as compensation, according to the sources.

Aside from compensation, another hold-up in the negotiations is believed to be which front-office personnel Epstein can bring to Chicago, according to ESPNBoston.com, which reported that the Red Sox were not going to allow Epstein to take any members of his inner circle. That could have changed, however, during negotiations.

Major League Baseball rules state a club has seven days to sign a person under contract to another team. This goes into effect after the team was granted permission to meet the employee. Teams can ask for an extension if the conversation appears to be ongoing, according to a major league source.

Epstein was still in Boston on Monday morning, according to a source.

Major League Baseball prohibits major announcements during the World Series, which starts Wednesday. However, there have been exceptions. In October, 2009, the Cubs were able to announce the purchase of 95 percent of the team from Sam Zell and Tribune Co., by the Ricketts family for $855 million. The announcement came between the second and third games of the World Series between the New York Yankees and Phillies on a travel day.

It has now been a week since word first broke that Theo Epstein was on the verge of signing with the Chicago Cubs. And it has been five days since Epstein agreed a five-year $15 million contract with the Cubs.

And yet here we sit, a week later, and Epstein is still the general manager of the Boston Red Sox, as both sides continue to negotiate compensation. Epstein still has one year remaining on his Red Sox contract.

One report says that the negotiations between the Cubs and Red Sox have grown increasingly contentious, and that Red Sox president Larry Luccino is trying to make it difficult for Epstein to take his “dream situation” with the Cubs. Another report states that the Red Sox want two top prospects from the Cubs system, something that would handicap Epstein’s job right out of the gate.

But at this point, can the two sides walk away from a deal? And is there any way Epstein can remain GM of the Red Sox for the 2012 season?

Not likely.

At some point, Bud Selig and Major League Baseball will have to get involved. The Red Sox have already named Epstein’s replacement, and the relationship between Epstein and the Sox would appear to be irreparable.

CHICAGO (AP) — The Cubs are still talking with the Boston Red Sox about compensation in a deal to bring general manager Theo Epstein to Chicago, a person familiar with the negotiations said yesterday.

Epstein has agreed to a deal with the Cubs and would leave Boston with a year remaining on his contract, the person said on condition of anonymity because the negotiations are confidential. The deal is reportedly for five years.

Whether the Cubs have to send the Red Sox cash, prospects or both was not clear, though various reports say the two sides were not in agreement Thursday. The talks continued Friday for a second day.

Any deal would have to be approved by Major League Baseball.

Red Sox owner John Henry said he didn’t want Epstein to leave.

“I’d love to have Theo back. I would have loved for Theo to have been our general manager for the next 20 years,” Henry told WBZ Radio in Boston.

“That was my hope. That would have been my hope. But you don’t always get what you want. I did everything I could, personally –and so did (Red Sox executives) Tom (Werner) and Larry (Lucchino) to make that happen. But the fact that is, and I think people don’t understand this, the fact is that being the general manager in Boston or being the manager in Boston is a terrifically tough job.”

Epstein got the job at age 28 in 2002.

“He never saw the general manager’s role as longer than 10 years for himself,” Henry said. “I mean, maybe he did early

on, but certainly after a few years he knew the stress of this job was too much.”

The potential arrival of Epstein has Cubs fans in a tizzy. It has been greeted with even more fanfare than the hiring of marquee managers Dusty Baker and Lou Piniella in an effort to end a World Series championship drought that reached 103 years after a 71-91 finish this season.

Epstein, now 37, was at the helm when the Red Sox ended an 86-year World Series championship drought in 2004 and won the title again in 2007.

Epstein also has his critics after the Red Sox collapsed in September and missed the playoffs for a second straight year. Some of his big-contract players like John Lackey, Edgar Renteria, Daisuke Matsuzaka didn’t measure up while another, outfielder Carl Crawford, struggled in his first season with the Red Sox.

Epstein’s first order of business — if and when the deal is complete — could be to determine the future of manager Mike Quade, who has one year left on his two-year deal.

What are your opinions.

Cubs chairman Tom Ricketts fired GM Jim Hendry in July after another disappointing season and wants a GM schooled in both old-school scouting and the new world of statistical analysis. The Yale-schooled Epstein would fit both requirements.

Another potential stumbling block could be which members of the Red Sox’s organization — if any — Epstein would be allowed to take with him to Chicago.
