The Boston Red Sox and the Pawtucket Red Sox are pleased to announce that Arnie Beyeler has been named as the new PawSox manager for the 2011 season. Additionally, the clubs today announced that pitching Coach Rich Sauveur will return for his fourth season with the PawSox while trainer Jon Jochim is back for his second year. The new PawSox hitting coach for 2011 has not yet been named.

The 46-year-old Beyeler has been the manager of the Portland Sea Dogs (Boston’s Double-A affiliate in the Eastern League) for the past four seasons (2007-2010) compiling a 282-283 record. He guided Portland to consecutive Eastern League playoff appearances in 2007 & 2008 before the Sea Dogs lost in the first round to Trenton both years.

Last season Beyeler was instrumental in the development of RHP Casey Kelly and 1B Anthony Rizzo, both since traded to San Diego as part of the Adrian Gonzalez deal, as well as top Red Sox prospects such as SS Jose Iglesias and catchers Luis Exposito and Ryan Lavarnway.

Other Recent Portland standouts who he has managed in his four years with the Sea Dogs include: pitchers Clay Buchholz (2007), Daniel Bard (2008), Michael Bowden (2007-08), Felix Doubront (2009-10), and Junichi Tazawa (2009) along with players Jacoby Ellsbury (2007), Jed Lowrie (2007), Lars Anderson (2008-10), Josh Reddick (2008), Daniel Nava (2009), Yamaico Navarro (2009-10), and Ryan Kalish (2009-10). PawSox regulars like Aaron Bates (2007-09), Bubba Bell (2007-09), and Mark Wagner (2008-09) have also played for Beyeler.

Overall in 10 years as a minor league manager (seven in the Red Sox system and three in the Texas organization), Beyeler has posted a 642-630 career record (.505 winning pct.).

Arnie played six seasons in the minor leagues from 1986-91 after graduating from Wichita State where he was an all-conference infielder. Beyeler was a middle infielder in the Tigers system and reached Triple-A Toledo in 1991. In 584 games he hit .254 with 69 stolen bases.

After his playing days he served as an area scout for the Detroit Tigers from 1992-96 before spending three years as a coach in the Yankees minor league system (including 1998-99 with Double-A Norwich of the Eastern League).

Beyeler began his Red Sox coaching career ironically as the PawSox hitting coach for the first half of the 2000 season before leaving to manage the Lowell Spinners (Red Sox short-season A club) in June of that year. He managed Lowell in 2000 and 2001 and Single-A Augusta in 2002 before being hired by Texas.

From 2003-2005 he managed in Single-A in the Rangers system leading Stockton to the California League playoffs in both 2003 & 2004. In 2006 Arnie served as the hitting coach for San Diego’s Double-A affiliate in Mobile before rejoining the Red Sox organization in 2007 with Portland.

Beyeler was born in Moab, Utah and currently resides in Ponte Vedra Beach, FL. He has two children, Jordan (19) and Brady (15).
