May 6th, 2008 The Amount of Talent Makes Me Sick.

As an avid Red Sox hater, the sight of them bringing up super prospect after super prospect drives me sick.  I’d love nothing more than the Sox to go through a 10 year futility spell just like my Orioles, but it seems impossible with all of the young guys they are producing.  It’s like they have a replacement for every position that needs to be filled.  It’s a laundry list of names.

Closer Keith Foulke gets too old?  Easy, call up Jonathan Papelbon.  Originally a starter but was moved to the bullpen out of necessity.  He proceeds to post a 2.65 ERA in his rookie year.  In 2006, his first year as closer, he takes the league by storm and absolutely dominates (0.92 ERA, 35 saves).  Last year he regressed, if you could even call it that, as he put up a 1.85 ERA and 37 saves, not mentioning the 84 strikeouts in 58 innings with only 15 walks…talk about efficient.

Curt Schilling is injured?  Lets go into the All Star Factory we call a minor league system and call up Clay Buchholz, who might I add has the nastiest breaking ball that I have ever seen.  The 23 year old had a stellar (yet short) debut in 2007 with the Sox, including a no-hitter in his second career start against, you guessed it, the Orioles.  He’s gotten off to a good start so far this year (3-2, 3.71 ERA in 31 innings) and is expected to be a fixture in Boston’s rotation for a long time.  I dread having to see my O’s face him every year.

Need an outfielder?  Jacoby Ellsbury says hello.  While still Rookie of the Year eligible, he became a playoff hero after his stellar performance in the 2007 World Series against Colorado.  He brings speed, great fielding, and decent power and will hit for average.  Ellsbury’s the early favorite for ROY and is becoming more and more like the next Johnny Damon, but Johnny Damon with an actual throwing arm.

I forgot to even mention guys like RP Craig Hansen and SS Jed Lowrie, who have performed well since their recent call-ups.  They still have a ton of guys lower down in their system who aren’t ML ready yet, but project to be above average Major League players.  It’s sickening that the team is set up to dominate the AL for the next 10+ years.

December 12th, 2007 Red Sox and Minnesota Talks Bak On

Boston.com reported Tuesday talks between the Minnesota Twis and Boston Red Sox resumed. While no deal appeared imminent, there were indications that the Twins were focused on a package headlined by center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury.

The Red Sox have offered Ellsbury and pitcher Jon Lester in separate deals, while refusing to include both in the same offer. Of those two options, the Twins were said to be leaning toward a package of Ellsbury, infield prospect Jed Lowrie and relief prospect Justin Masterson, with the sides haggling over a fourth player.

Meanwhile, the Twins’ talks with the Yankees remained dormant. According to a person close to the talks, Yankees lefthander Kei Igawa was one of several players the sides discussed last week, along with righthander Phil Hughes and center fielder Melky Cabrera.”
